With tests and exams coming thick and fast for kids of all ages it can be all too easy to lose sight of the fact that they’re kids nonetheless. If you let a child play with their friends you give them a chance to unleash their imagination, burn off some energy, and learn something new all at the same time. That, in short, is the idea behind National Play Day, so read on for great National Play Day Ideas!
It’s something celebrated by hundreds of schools up and down the UK, with more and more joining up every single year. If it sounds like the kind of thing that you want your pupils to experience too then read on. And if you’re looking for something new and exciting to top last year’s Play Day then read on too!
We’re not talking about sitting in the assembly hall playing on the X-Box or waiting in line to have a go on a PlayStation. Kids do this kind of thing all the time at home, and whilst there are some benefits to computer games, there’s no substitute for getting active and getting creative when it comes to playing.
Play can be messy, it can be muddy, and it can be tiring. It’s all about burning off that youthful energy so that they remember that school is not just about lessons, tests, and exams. If you want to find something different that your pupils won’t have done before then you’re in good hands. One of our directors is even a qualified P.E. teacher which means we know a thing or two about keeping Play Day activities in line with the various requirements and restrictions that every school has to contend with.
You could certainly have a staff vs pupil game of netball or football as part of proceedings, but to make it memorable for everyone involved you’ll want to push the boat a little further than that. We have a whole host of options when it comes to inflatables and big-play items that you wouldn’t see in a school playground at any other time of year. They would be ideal centrepieces for the day ahead and will get everyone excited about Play Day when you announce that your school is joining in the fun.
Plus, if you’re worried that your staff will be shown up on the netball court you could get the opposition to tire themselves out before the big game!
Playing is as much about looking back fondly on time well spent as it is about enjoying the moment. Nominate a member of staff to take plenty of photos on their digital camera so that you can show them to parents to remember the day. It’s all about capturing the pure joy kids have when they’re allowed to cut loose and enjoy a few hours of uninterrupted play. Stick plenty of them up around the school afterwards and you’ll be able to bring that feel good vibe into the classrooms as your pupils enjoy their learning like never before.
They will also serve as the perfect way to get your pupils excited about next year’s Play Day when the big day comes around all over again!
It’s always best if you make Play Day a non-uniform day, but this doesn’t mean that you want the kids arriving in brand new Manchester United shirts or pretty little dresses. Play Day works best when having plenty of messy play so that kids can feel like kids again. By giving parents plenty of notice about what they can expect you can ensure that they send their little ones in wearing an old t-shirt or pair of shorts that they’re not bothered about. It’ll also mean that you can bring in plenty of big outdoor games, paints, crafts, anything that fits in with your school’s vision for the big day.
Just make sure that you have plenty of soap and paper towels to hand so that you can send everyone home without too much mess!
